Real-Time Study of Psychotherapy, Suicide Risk, and Resilience in Transgender and Non-Binary Adults
Thank you for your interest in participating in this project. This study is designed to help us understand more about short-term risk and protective factors for suicide among transgender and gender-diverse people. We are seeking U.S. residents, ages 18 and older, who have experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviors in the past month and who are currently enrolled in outpatient psychotherapy.
This survey will take less than 2 minutes of your time and will determine if you are eligible to enroll in the study. You will answer some basic questions about yourself (age, location) and the best ways to contact you (email, phone, text; an email is not required for us to contact you at this time, however a functional email address is required to participate). You will also be asked about when you most recently experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviors and/or received psychological therapy.
Your participation is completely voluntary. You can skip any questions you are not comfortable with and stop at any point.
Completing this survey will determine if you move forward with determining your eligibility for the study; details about the study are listed below. You can also read more about the study through our TRICON (Transgender Research Informed Consent) statement, which is available here. You will not be paid for completing this prescreening survey or for completing the pre-study eligibility process.
There are no foreseeable risks to your participation. To protect your confidentiality, no one outside of the research team will have access to your information, which will be kept in a password-protected file on an encrypted drive. Your information that we collect as part of this survey, even if identifiers are removed, will not be used or distributed in other research studies.
If, after completing this prescreening survey, you are a good fit for our study, a member of the research team will send a copy of our consent form to your mailing address. Once you receive the consent form, we will find a time to meet with you on Zoom for 5-10 minutes to review the consent form and verify your identification. You will need to provide identification that matches your mailing address, or, if you do not have that, identification that matches your name and a piece of mail addressed to you at your mailing address. You will also need to show us the unique code that will be written on the consent form you receive in the mail. If you do not have valid identification, proof of residence, and the physical consent form that we mail to the matching address, you will not be able to move forward with participation.
Once your identity and address are verified, we will schedule the first session via Zoom, which takes about 3 hours. You will need access to a private space and a webcam. You will receive a $50 Amazon gift card for your time. Some participants will be eligible for a second part of the study in which you will be asked to complete brief surveys on your phone for 4 weeks. You may also be invited to complete a short follow-up interview at the end of the 4 weeks, which will take approximately 45 minutes. You may also be eligible for additional survey questions after the initial session. The compensation for these additional parts of the study will be described in the consent form and during the informed consent process.
